The Joy of Bouldering

Bouldering is a type of rock climbing which began as way for rock climbers to practice their moves on a smaller scale and a shorter climb. However, because of its charm, bouldering has become a sport in and of itself. If you havent tried rock climbing yet, bouldering is a great way to learn and a great derivative of the sport. If you have been rock climbing for years, but havent tried bouldering yet, now is a great time!

There are two main differences between rock climbing and bouldering. The first difference is the climb itself. When you rock climb, the distance of the climb can be endless. Bouldering however, is a much shorter climb, generally staying below nine feet. The reason for this is the second difference, you are not attached to the wall. When you rock climb, you are hooked up to a harness and rope system that attaches you to the wall and protects you against falls. When you are bouldering, there is no such system. The only protections you have during bouldering in a bouldering mat. This extremely cushioned mat is laid out beneath you, and moved by your partner as you shift positions on the boulder or rock wall. This mat is your lifeline should you fall off of the rock. If you are above nine feet, the mat will provide little protection, therefore anything above nine feet is no longer considered bouldering, but rather free soloing. Free soloing is another derivative of rock climbing (usually above twenty one feet) and is considered to be extremely dangerous. This is not for beginners, or anything below expert climbers.

There are two scales used in determining the difficulty of a climb. The John Sherman scale is rated between V0 and V16, a V0 being the easiest. It can go above a V16, depending on the climb. The Fountainbleau system ranges from 1 to 8c+ and can also extend beyond the top rating. If you are just starting out, whether in a climbing gym or out in nature, make sure you begin with the very easiest of climbs and work your way up. Trying to conquer a more difficult climb before you are ready can be extremely dangerous.

Bouldering is a great activity for people of all ages. It is challenging, exciting and exhilarating. If you have never been climbing or bouldering, give it a try, you will love it!
