Fire defender Bakary Soumare said that if you don’t concede goals, you can’t lose. He continued to say as long as his club keeps getting shutouts, they will earn at least one point, but their goal is to pick up three points in each contest. Nyarko, who scored the game-winner with eight minutes left against the San Jose Earthquakes, was able to help Chicago take three points after their win against RSL.

Nyarko’s registered his fourth goal of the season in the 76th minute. Mike Banner tossed the ball into play and found a wide open Tim Ward along the left wing. The midfielder then drove the ball into the center of the box, where Nyarko freed himself from a defender and hammered a shot off his head which deflected the left post and went into the back of the net. The forward is seeing increased playing time after U.S. national team star Brian McBride underwent shoulder surgery. He will be out for the next four months. Prior to the injury, Nyarko had been used on the right wing. Chicago head coach Denis Hamlett told his club that after McBride’s injury, the team would be different.

The coach explained by saying that his team can use more of their speed to burn the opposition. He added that Patrick is fast, but most people don’t realize how fast the forward is, and he knows how to use his body to get inside a defender. Fire goalkeeper Jon Busch stopped all five shots against RSL (6-8-5). The goalkeeper registered his seventh shutout of the season, tying him with Chivas USA’s Zack Thornton for second place in the league. Houston’s Pat Onstad is in the lead with eight shutouts. In 2008, Bush was awarded MLS goalkeeper of the Year. The Fire won despite missing two key players, Cuauhtemoc Blanco (left ankle sprain) and defender Wilman Conde (left hamstring soreness).

Both players were sidelined due to injuries after Wednesday’s All-Star game at Salt Lake, where the MLS team lost 4-3 on penalties to England’s Evert. They should be back for Wednesday’s SuperLiga final against Tigre sod Mexico. Chicago is in second place in the Eastern Conference, they are one point behind first-place Columbus, who won their match against the Colorado Rapids on 8-1-09. The Fire has a game in hand on the reigning MLS champion. RSL are 1-7-2 on the road this season. The team had a golden opportunity in the 72nd minute when Tony Beltran rifled a shot from 20 yards out, but the ball hit the crossbar. RSL coach Jason Kreis said he felt like his team played well enough to earn a draw. The coach is serving the first of his two-game suspension for arguing with officials in their 4-2 victory over Dallas.
