If you have an older fireplace in your home, it may be time to give it a face lift. This is a pretty easy home improvement project to undertake, and you’ll be surprised at how it really changes the way the entire room looks. No matter where the fireplace is located, whether in a bedroom, living room, or family room, if it is old, it may be time for a makeover. Here is a look at some of the materials and tools you are going to need to make this happen.

You are going to need several different power tools when it comes to doing your fireplace makeover. When you use good power tools, it will make this job even easier for you. Some of the power tools you are going to need include finish nailer, a good power drill, brad nailer, wet saw, air compressor, and tile spacers.

There are some other materials and items you are going to need for this project as well, other than just the right power tools. You will need to have some 12″ x 12″ slate tile, grout, mortar, a bucket, notched trowel, sponges, painting supplies, and some good safety glasses. Just remember, it is important that you have eye protection on when you are working with any type of pneumatic or power tools. This way you keep safe while you are making over your fireplace.

Once you have the power tools, materials, and other items gathered together, it’s time to get started on this home improvement project. Start out by measuring the are that you want to cover up. Decide which parts you want to make look bigger with some trim. Then you’ll want to add in the slate tiles, using some masonry sealer to cover it first so you can get off mortar and grout when you are done. Use the wet saw to trim the tiles to the size you will need.

Mix up the mortar you have and then start putting the mortar on the brick and the tile you are going to use. Make sure that you use the spacers between tiles so you have enough room to put the grout in. It’s a good idea to have a wood frame built there so you won’t end up having the tiles fall out. After you allow the tile to set and dry, then you can come back and do the grout work, which should probably wait until the next day. After you put in the grout, use a putty knife to get rid of the excess grout and then wipe a bit later with a sponger that is wet so you get it all off. Then add any decorative trim you want. After adding the trim, prime it and then paint it.

It’s really that simple to make your fireplace look great again. With the right power tools and a few materials you can easily and quickly change the way your fireplace looks. It won’t even cost you a lot of money and it will really change the way that your entire room looks.
