Cleveland Browns Tickets - No QB Shuffle
Word out of Cleveland Browns training camp is that new head coach Eric Mangini plans to select a starting quarterback and stick with him for the duration of the season, as opposed to putting the team through the back-and-forth waffling that we see some coaches do. The Browns are coming off a tough season in which they were largely a disappointment after sniffing the playoff the season prior. In turn, management fire Romeo Crennel and hired Mangini, who had recently been dismissed by the New York Jets.
While it may not be the first thing on Mangini’s mind, the quarterback situation in Cleveland is likely at the forefront of every Browns fan’s mind. It’s well-known that the NFL is a quarterback-driven league and a good performance out of the team’s signal caller will sell more Cleveland Browns tickets. For Mangini, the choice of who lines up under center come week one comes down to Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. Both players started games for the team last season before suffering injuries, and Mangini has declared an open competition for the starting job.
Anderson has the advantage from an experience standpoint. He’s started significantly more pro games and put together a really good season a few years back. He’s got great size for the position and seemed to develop a solid rapport with receiver Braylon Edwards. He’s improved his work ethic in recent years and has good physical tools.
Quinn, though, is the favorite to win the job. He’s a tireless worker and is one of the most finely-tuned physical specimens in the league, and not just among quarterbacks. Quinn also probably has an edge on Anderson from a mental aspect.
Mangini plans to run a conservative, ball control-oriented offense, which suits Quinn more than it does Anderson. Anderson is a bit of a gunslinger and will try to fit the ball into tight spaces at some inadvisable times. Quinn seems better-suited to play within himself and within a system. He’s a quick and willing learner, and will put in the work in the film room as well as the weight room.
The Browns might not have the most explosive offense in the league this season, but they’ll need solid quarterback play to succeed. They’ll look to run the ball early and often, while depending on their quarterback to take good care of the ball when trying to move the chains. Mangini is a defensive mind, first and foremost, so that side of the ball will certainly be emphasized within this new regime. A good defense and strong running game can make things a lot easier on whoever is playing quarterback for the team.
It doesn’t hurt that Quinn, a local native, is a fan favorite, but that won’t sway Mangini’s decision. Still, it seems as though the fans are rooting for Quinn to permanently take over the reins of this team. He appears to have everything one would want in a franchise quarterback and Mangini’s conservative system could actually be extremely beneficial to Quinn’s growth as it won’t ask the young quarterback to do too much too soon.
