The concept of saving face in fears of some public humility is something most people understand. Many people dream of having an international best seller. Naturally since most books never reach that status, writers and would-be authors can’t get enough information about how others did it.
As most authors discover, the reality is a lot different from the advice or what you read in magazines. There’s a lot of trial and effort involved. But if you keep plugging someone will either like your book or tell you how to make it better. Then, you have a beginning.
Here’s our story.
The name “Arkansas,” is derived from the French interpretation of a Quapaw word which means either, “land of the downriver people,” or, “people of the south wind.” Though the name’s French roots should make the pronunciation obvious, there was, believe it or not, intense debate about it between the state’s senators during the nineteenth century. One insisted it should be pronounced the same as Kansas; the other senator, considering the word’s French influence, claimed it should be AR-kan-saw. The latter won out, and in 1881, an act of the state legislature declared its official pronunciation.
Like those of much of the rest of the Americas, Mississippi’s earliest inhabitants predate recorded history. We know little about the first Mississippians, except that they settled along the river–from which the state derives its name, it simply meaning, “Great River”–and developed flourishing agriculturally-based societies. From these predecessors spring some of the more familiar tribes: the Chickasaw, the Choctaw, the Natchez, and so on.
Wow, what a week! We’re exhausted and giddy.
All the door knocking, registering voters, phone calling, emails, pestering people in line to the rally… It really worked! We were still calling people up ten minutes before the polls were closing - telling them that if they’re in line by 8pm, they have the right to vote; if they needed a ride, we’d come and pick them up… It was heartening to hear people on the street, asking each other if they’d voted yet. We had record voter turn outs here in PA… with a little help from our friends.
