Atlanta Falcons Tickets - Douglas Loss Shines Light on WR Situation
The Atlanta Falcons were recently dealt a blow that could affect the rest of the season. Wide receiver Harry Douglas is going to miss the entire season after suffering a tear to his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The injury came during practice when Douglas caught a pass from Matt Ryan and then fell to the ground in pain. Douglas’s agent, David Rich, said that the injury is not career ending, but it will take him out the rest of the Year. This season was only going to be Douglas’s second in the league. He was picked by the Falcons in the third round of the 2008 draft. Last season, he wasn’t a starter, but he did see time in all 16 regular season games. He finished with 23 receptions, 320 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown as well as 69 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. He was heavily relied upon for his return abilities as well.
The injury to Douglas draws even more attention to the situation with wide receiver Roddy White. White has been holding out for a new contract. White is veteran starter for the Falcons, as he started all but one game last season. He was selected by the Falcons in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft as the 27th overall pick. Last season, he tallied 88 receptions, 1,382 yards and seven touchdowns. Although the team squashed the talk that Douglas’s injury could be fortuitous to White’s negotiations, he seems to be in a better negotiating position now that they need to lock in depth at the position.
The Falcons aren’t without other stars though. Michael Jenkins is their other tried-and-true veteran starter. He was a first-round draft pick in 2004. By his second year with the Falcons, he had already worked his way up to a starter. Last season, he played in every game and started 12, tallying 50 receptions 777 yards and three touchdowns. Brian Finneran is another talent on the team, and he has been with the Falcons since he entered the league in 2000. He was a starter in 2002 and 2003, but he didn’t start any games last year. He did, however, play in every game and had 21 receptions, 169 yards and one touchdown. Without Douglas, he is likely to be another backup receiver.
The Falcons didn’t pick up any wide receivers in this year’s draft, but they did reach out to many undrafted free agents to add depth. They have Bradon Godfrey from Utah, who had 128 receptions, 1,440 yards and eight touchdowns during his tenure at Utah. Aaron Kelly hails from Clemson, where he holds the school record for career touchdown receptions with 20. He seems to be the most likely to make an impact for the Falcons this season. They also picked up Darren Mougey, who played both wide receiver and quarterback at San Diego State. Last season, he had 34 receptions, 437 yards and four touchdowns.
